Teaching your dog the “heel command” is extremely important. It gets them to walk peacefully at your side. Also, when off leash they may get into an area with other dogs or too many people around. In this case – you may have to get them to heel until you get through these problem areas.

The heel command is nothing more than getting your dog to walk calmly at your side until he is let go – almost as if they have an invisible leash on. Next to the “sit-stay” and “come” command – heel is extremely important. This can be a difficult command for many dogs to learn as it is not a natural thing for them to do. Consistency and perseverance will be the key here.
